The upgrade of an item can be used to increase the stats of a particular item. Depending on the type of upgrade you choose, it can increase the rarity of an item or mark Level and boost additional stats.

Upgrading equipment in The War Within requires a specified number of Flightstones and Crests and each item comes with an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next one by a set amount.

Item Level

The value of an item's base stats increases as it is upgraded. This value is the total of all the leveled up benefits (attack magic attack, attack defense). The cost of upgrading items can be high, depending on the upgrader and the kind of upgrade you decide to make. This is due to the fact that many perks need to be replaced in order for the item to get upgraded.

The level of an item is a widely used measure of power, and is visible on all tooltips for items. It can also be used to limit the amount of PvP gear players are able to wear as PvP is restricted at lower levels. The average level of the item can be found on the character sheet.

When deciding to purchase or sell gear players can evaluate the item level. It's an indicator of the damage and its quality. The item level can also be used to evaluate items when examining a vendor's inventory.

The item level can be seen by pressing the ALT key on a PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. The item will be displayed with its full description, including the ilvl. It can also be found by hovering over an item using the mouse cursor, and then typing /itemlevel in chat.

There are many theories about how the item level is determined. One theory says that the item level is calculated by a formula that calculates the worth of the stats of an item really are. It considers that different advantages are valued differently and that gems found in sockets increase the value of the item. This process can result in a calculated value for the item's ilvl which is usually quite close to the actual Blizzard item level.

It's not the only factor that affects the level of an item. The degree of the area in which the item dropped can also change its stats. For example it can add a level to the item's haste or crit rating. This means that items dropped at higher levels will have more ilvl than those from lower-level instances.

Item Stats

The stats of an item are a major part of what makes or breaks an item for players. The game uses a variety of them in different ways to encourage players to use multiple weapons, and prevent one weapon from being "the most effective." The base stats of a weapon are increased by the weapon's stat modifications which are then enhanced by the player's level.

The upgrades to items add by boosting certain stats on the item. The upgrade costs are determined by the rarity of the item. For example, a grey or white item will only be upgraded once, while an item with rare levels will be upgraded multiple times with higher prices.

At present, all affixes can be changed by selecting them from the upgrade window and pressing the green button, which is accompanied by circles arrows. This will cost a specific amount of gold and other items. These can be used as upgrade gauges, as with other rerolling methods.

Players can choose to upgrade an item to a specific stat or reroll affixes. The possible ranges of stats for an item are based on the item level, but all items are guaranteed to have at least one stat within the specified range, unless it's an item that is unique or an item that is a God roll from a raid boss.

Another thing that could be changed is the possibility of upgrading equipment without having to roll the attachments, or pick which stats to increase. But, like base equipment, this would need to be performed on a per-item level, and the interface for comparing items will not show all the stats that could be either lost or gained at the same time.

Item Luck

The Luck stat for a player adds up to increase the chances of item discoveries, the properties spawned on loot drops and the intensity of those properties. However, it does not directly impact damage or the ability to upgrade items. It simply gives players the chance to acquire better equipment in earlier waves, and is therefore more beneficial in the early game as opposed to later ones, as most players prioritize more powerful weapon scaling and defenses over damage gains.

In addition to influencing item discovery, Luck also increases the chance of success when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade chances that increase with each item level.  item upgrading  can also be increased with the use of anti-materials, such as a Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.

Weapons, shields, and armor can be created or spawned with the Luck property, with an initial value of 40. These items can be enhanced with golden ingots, spined leather or oak boards (depending on the item's material type) to give +40 Luck or to boost the luck of an item, up to 140.

Furthermore there are certain items, such as the Hollow infused weapon can be outfitted to increase the damage dealt by any damage-dealing skill by 5percent. These items are available at the store or constructed using the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Not all upgrades are successful. Cash shop items can be used to boost the chance of success of an upgrade or to stop players from losing their item in the event that it is not successful.

The rate of success of an upgrade can be seen in the Honing UI. The percentage indicates the probability of successfully upgrading the item. This can be increased with Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limitations on the extent to which success rates can be increased and the probability of an upgrade failing cannot exceed 100%.

The success of an can be affected by the luck of that item. All items have a base success rate of 25%, and every item with Luck increases the chance of success by an additional 5%.

Note that upgrades to items are rendered above the inventory items, so enchantment glint and other effects may be obstructed by them. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
